How the hell did that happen so fast? Or maybe it hadn’t been fast at all. Had I really been gone long enough that it gave Colton a chance to swoop in and steal my girl?

Hell, a single minute was probably too long to leave a woman like Lily alone. Especially the way she looked tonight. If I hadn’t known who she was, I would have wanted to. And I bet that was exactly what Colton had thought when he looked at her. Like she was a prize to be won, a winning ticket to be claimed, a gorgeous woman he just had to meet.

Colton Adams was one of the hottest actors of our generation. Tonight’s party was themed around the box-office smash that he had starred in and won an Oscar for. And he was currently focusing all of his attention on my girl, his head turned toward hers as he listened to her with raptly and clung on to whatever she was saying. And from my vantage point, she was clearly enjoying it. Not that I blamed her entirely. Colton had a reputation for actually being a decent guy, and the few times I’d been able to meet him in person, he actually had been.

Just my fucking luck, right? The least he could do was be a complete douche bag and give the rest of us poor schmucks a chance.

As Lily stood next to him, her head tilted back in a laugh, Colton’s free hand moved to rest on her lower back, like my woman was his to touch and hold. Jealousy and competition seared red hot through my body like a flame, burning everything in its wake to ash. The way he held her was definitely more than a little friendly, giving off vibes to anyone who looked at them that they were an item—or at least coupled up for the night.

Fuck. I’d lost my dream girl before I got the chance to have her.

I slammed my fist on the handrail, thankful that our set builders were top-notch. Another set might have crumbled under my hit or at least started cracking but not ours.

“Why are you still standing here? Go get her. You know you want to,” Marlo egged me on.

I turned to face him with a scowl. The last thing I wanted was him in my personal business or giving me any sort of love advice, but he seemed hell-bent on pushing me in Lily’s direction tonight, and I had no idea why.

“What’s your play here?” I all but growled at him.

His face pulled together in confusion. “My play?”

“Yeah. What’s in it for you if Lily and I get together? It’s not like you can take my job—we’re equals. So, how do you benefit?” I asked, sounding like a dick. I’d never completely trusted Marlo before, and I wasn’t about to start now.
